History & Projects

The Brighton based charity Komedia Productions was formed in 1994. 

These are some of the projects it has supported:

A weekly programme of children’s theatre presenting the best national and international small-scale theatre companies. Highlights included Theatre of Widdershin’s The Elves & The Shoemakers, Storybox Theatre’s The Tin Soldier, Circus Minimus and Tom Thumb by Lyngo Theatre, Aesop’s Fables by Scamp Theatre, Puppet State State Theatre’s The Man Who Planted Trees and Banyan Theatre’s Cinderella Ashputtel. (1994 –2007)

A year round programme of cabaret shows in close collaboration with Bright-based performancers Voodoo Vaudeville, Happy Belated Birthday & Vive La Fip Bastille Day Cabaret and The Treason Show, and national, The Tiger Lillies, Tina C, Barb Jungr, Amy Lame, David Hoyle & internationally Les Cabaret Des Chiche Capon.  (1998–2008)

A year round programme of world, folk & jazz music featuring amongst many others Bajofondo Tango Club (Argentina), Purbayan Chatterjee (India), Tinariwen (Algeria), Mahala Rai Banda (Romania), Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman, Karine Polwart, Tunng, Polar Bear.  (2002–2008)

Aurora Nova Touring, a yearly showcase of international physical & visual theatre from Komedia’s acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival Aurora Nova programme which included award winning productions  Knots by CoisCeim Dance (Ireland), the Ketzal by the Derevo (Russia), the New York performance artist Taylor Mac, Japanese mime comedy duo Gamarjobat, Brighton based Prodigal Theatre with Queen of Slaughter and Inspector Sands and Stamping Ground’s Hysteria. (2006–2008)

Monthly Tea Dances in association with Brighton based theatre company Ragroof. (2005–2008)

The Studio Bar provides a space for artists to showcase theatre, cabaret, music, mixed media events, book launches, workshops and rehearsals and was free of charge for local artists.

Spoken Word events. Monthly residencies for Hammer & Tongue, promoting the best spoken local, national & international spoken word artists as well as open poetry slams; Short Fuse, a live short fiction event and platform for local & national fiction writers and regular literary cabaret events featuring local writers, poets & singers.

Home of Brighton Jazz Club. Weekly residency presenting a high profile programme of jazz events throughout the year.


Short film events
. Monthly residency for Final Cut short films from local, national and international filmmakers.

 

Since 2012 we have supported Sundae Club at Komedia and with our cinema partner Dukes at Komedia, alongside ongoing projects with Hijack.
