In a unique collaboration, four independent Sussex venues: Komedia, Ropetackle, Brighton Open Air Theatre and The Old Market worked together to produce Back to Live, a special season of events for children of all ages celebrating the return of live performance that ran between 9 – 24 April 2022. From puppets to bubbles, classic tales to clubs, internationally acclaimed and local artists there really is something for everyone in this exciting programme of events.
‘As a venue operator who has worked with Komedia Productions for years, we jumped at the chance to be part of a wider scale event as hosting a festival with other respected venues in the area brings us all together, widens the potential pool of audience and generally makes a brilliant event for the city.’
— Paul Musselwhite , General Manager at Komedia
A huge part of Back to Live was to offer free tickets to families who might not otherwise be able to afford to come, helping to make live performance accessible to all. Thanks to funding from Chalk Cliff Trust Foundation and a Pay it Forward scheme that each venue set up we were able to offer over 250 free tickets across the 2 weeks. Tickets were allocated to families via charities we work with including Amaze, Early Childhood Project, Little Green Pig, West Sussex Mind and Shoreham Food Bank to name but a few.
‘We had a lovely time. It was D’s first time at something like this and I’m so glad I took him. He sat and watched the whole show which is amazing for him as he has a.s.d, he got really involved too, which was amazing to see. Many thanks for the tickets.’

We are hoping to build on Back to Live and return next year, watch this space….
